Day of art

I recently visited the gauguin exhibition, I like him as a painter but felt the exhibition was too crowded, especially round his well known paintings. Those paintings were beautiful and I could've stared at them for hours. But the surprise of the exhibition for me was discovering an Illustrator called maurice boutet de monvel and his illustrations for a book by la fontaine called fables. There was an illustration of a fox in the exhibition (room about his life/era he grew up in) which I have failed so far to find. But here are a few examples of his work.

Internship

I am so excited. I have somehow landed an amazing internship with the up and coming designer Lee Klabin. I start on monday for two weeks. At the moment I feel a little in over my head. But I know that it is just nerves. The project they have set me has already got my creative brain back in action. I now just need to locate a library in London and start drawing like a mad woman! YAY! Just wish it was a paid job... but somehow that would be too perfect.

Whales.

Finally sat down and did some doodling this afternoon. I loved it! Made a whole new alphabet for adding hand-drawn elements to my digital work, and did a rough and quick book cover for Moby-Dick. Think as a first draft it's pretty good.

Twitter account!

I have had my twitter account since September this year. But so far have tweeted twice. I guess like my blog it will take me a while to get into. But if you want to follow me, my account is twitter.com/rosalindmundie

Halloween

The owl turned out to be quite a challenge.

Must remember to take a camera with me at all times...

I have dismantled my exhibition at Ninewells hospital. It was sad taking it down and the cabinet looked so bear afterwards. It's just sad that despite being in the main reception area and waiting room, the cabinet contained only a few awful A4 printouts. It's ridiculous. The art in the hospital was pretty dire in general too. It just must be hard to be a regular patient there. There are just so many little changes that could really change the experience for patients. I'm not saying that my books were particularly uplifting but there were something more to look at. I hope people enjoyed seeing them whilst they were there.

Exhibition this week... part 2

So stv turned up as well as the local dundee paper. It was all a bit uneventful though. I spoke to the journalists but they didn't actually photograph my work which was a little heart breaking. I was asked if I wanted to do an interview for live tv, which i declined. I just couldn't have spoken on camera... it would've been soo awkward! Also my books were about ocd not hand washing. Ach well.

Thursday I went to see a hip hop dance show called Blaze. It was amazing! They opened with a line of 12 retro neon coloured trainers. They were in a row and all spotlighted, which the dancers wore throughout the show. It was all very michael jackson inspired. Sadly I only had phone with me, and the poor camera couldn't cope with the distance from the stage and darkness. So I don't have any decent photos to show of these trainers. I loved the show! Though it made me miss my dance classes more than ever. I just need to find some sort of replacement.

Exhibition this week.

I am really pleased with the way the book display turned out in ninewells, despite my panic before hand. I like that the books look completely different in the cabinet than at the degree show or new designers. Hopefully the members of the public will like it too.

A day of art.

Yesterday was spent being fairly creative for once, or rather a day of getting inspired again. I went round edinburgh's modern art gallery and loved their giant surrealist exhibition. Apparently when they started buying collections of work, surrealists were the only ones they could afford. But no one else was really bothering. Needless to say their collection is quite impressive. i really couldn't believe how many pieces i recognised. I didn't love all of it but it was just great to go to exhibition. Overheard someone giving a talk about the surrealists whilst I was there, and all she said was they shadow of a hanging sculpture was really interesting. Needless to say I could have done her job, or many other randoms from the street. It may have been simply a high school group but seriously!

Anyway I saw my favourite collage artist kurt schwitters, some lovely paintings and photography from Man Ray as well as the muse (of the surrealists) and photographer in her own right Lee Miller, and Marcel Duchamp (the man who paved the way for artist's like tracey emin etc).

I then went to a talk by the graphic design company bibliothèque. I kinda loved the talk because it gave me a kick up the arse to decide being a freelance illustrator is what i want to do. i just need to figure out how to do it. I thought some of their work was amazing, but hated all the brown nosing. But that is the bizz i suppose and the reason i have no illustrative work at the moment.

Will post some sketchbook work soon.

My first wedding.

Some text I did for my friend's wedding yesterday. She had a corner for photos for the hen and stag do, so I hung up the photos and wrote the names for them. Not hugely creative but something! I think Leanne and Graham will have a very happy future together. it was a lovely day... even if it was very long!

Inspiration?

So i was going through old sketchbooks and discovered this. The image is not mine but an illustration by Laura Henderson. I must have done it about 6 years ago. But think the text is cute. I really need to start doing new work, and less waitressing.

18th October = National Hygiene week!

I'm excited to say that my hand washing books will be appearing in Nine Wells Hospital for a week from 18th October to promote hand washing... might even display in Perth! I think it will be good to display the books within a medical environment, and see people's responses. So will just have to wait and see how it goes!

Love retro!

I really love the vintage vibe to this video

Oliver Jeffers

Whilst trying to create my own website (no idea where to start or what I want it to look like, just know what I don't want) I have spent a lot of time looking up illustrators/designers and artist's website. I stumbled upon Oliver Jeffers website today and I love it. I have always liked his children's book illustrations but never researched him much further. Every part of the website is carefully thought through and reflects beautifully a mix of vintage and modern... something I love. I especially like the news feed page. Amazing! Anyway here it is, see what you think.

The last 7 days!

So last week was manic. I went to London for the Penguin book awards. Didn't end up placing but did discover that I was amongst 10 people shortlisted for Puffin book design out of 773 people! So I did ok!!! I met a lot of lovely people there, and even spoke to some people who work for Penguin. I also met up with my friend Robyn in London too, where I saw some amazing artists in the portrait gallery and the tate modern. I love being in London and just being able to visit an art gallery whenever you want, there is just so much more to do and see there! Can't wait for New Designers next week, when I can live it up in London for a whole week! Anyway here are the artists I found most interesting!

Philip de László - made me want to paint again

Alex Katz - very interesting display of his portraits, and lovely style

In the Tate just neglected to write down the artist's name

Post-degree show

This last week has been a struggle. I had to resubmitt my penguin book entry, pack up my studio (which is still only half done, three years is a long to time to collect), prepare work for new designers (in july) and started my waitressing job. I've found it really hard to remotivate myself. But hopefully something good will come from penguin books, or maybe I will make some nice contacts at the ceremony. Will just have to wait and see. Oh and Willie Nelson is staying at the hotel I'm working at, wonder if he will be nice since he is so famous!

BA hons Illustrator!

I can't believe that's it! We've dismantled the degree show, and packing for New Designers starts now. I have a million deadlines running through my head at the moment, and am so nervous about resubmitting my penguin book. ARGH! It should be fine though, at least I placed! With my macbook, being out of action for the moment (will hopefully get fixed in a few days time) my posts may be few and far between. It is possibly the worst time for it to have crashed, well, next to degreeshow hand in! So here's a few more images of my degree show work. It already feels a life time ago, which is strange and scary. Hopefully my work will soon be appearing in book shops across the country!!!

Hospital

So I have had my first of (hopefully) many emails asking about my work! However the lady who emailed me works at ninewells and wants to display my handwashing books. But there is no money in it. I'm not sure if people will appreciate the books within the hospital and I meant the books to be about OCD, and compulsive washing... not a how to. I could adapt the books to that though. It is a bit of a problem. But I will take sometime to think about it, its kinda exciting!

Monday 24 May 2010

Degree show week

The reality of my degree show is setting in, thankfully. Although with reality is an overwhelming tiredness which I am not enjoying. I have started to tweak my penguin submission but it is going to take longer than I thought it would. But this is simply because I have started fiddling with every little detail. I really would like it to place. But you don't know what the competition will be like. I don't even know how many people I'm up against. Just nice to finally place for something, however small the title.

In other news, people have started to steal things from our degreeshow. It's ridiculous. I don't know how to deal with it. We all put our work in the space with the understanding people would respect the art exhibition. I just hope we can control it. Stop it. Otherwise we will all lose artwork that we spent a very long time over. I suppose we live and learn!

DEGREE SHOW

I had such an amazing night last night at the degree show, along with one too many glasses of wine! But it was celebratory so it's ok!!! I have so to do over the next few weeks. I have to redo/tweak my design for penguin and print send it down, see if I win or not! So exciting! I also have to get my website active. But after all the hard work to get my 2:1 honours degree, I am lacking motivation and energy! But penguin is such an amazing opportunity, that I will have to do my best to put 100% in. I have some not great photos of my degree show space, taken on my phone.

Penguin Books!

I found out yesterday that I got short listed for penguin books! This basically means after some chat with an art director I have to adjust my image, and resubmit it. If i'm successful I could possibly get my book cover published or an internship at Penguin. Either would absolutely amazing! And it is the kind of boost I needed. We find out our results at exactly 4.45pm today. I feel quite sick nervous with it all because we won't find out our break down (i.e. dissertation and studio work) until a few weeks. Let's hope penguin books is a good sign and for once my hard work will be rewarded! I know that in the future I won't need these grades, but for now it matters. So fingers crossed! I predict a lot of alcohol no matter what the result!

Degree show 2010!

I cannot believe that I have almost finished my final year at duncan of jordanstone! it has been a manic few weeks but things all came together so let's hope all my hard work was worth! Results are tuesday, and I'm dreading it. Despite being pleased with my work, and knowing a good portfolio is the thing that will get me work. For the moment the grades matter, least to me. So fingers crossed it goes ok!

2 weeks...

A photo i took of sarah, one of three (i think) I am really please with the way the photos turned out. Just need to put them in context... blah blah blah! Oh and I am in two minds about posting my penguin book entry before submitting. Maybe in a few weeks I will... just not sure about doing it before hand. Ah copyright!
